Mr. Johnson 03:58
Mr. Johnson’s out today, Playing with another stray, This time it’s the black and grey. They’re grooving on the neighbour’s fence, I’m looking at them through my lense, The garden birds are getting tense. Mr. Johnson’s coming in, Satisfied, and with such a grin, Catching prey is not a sin. Sleeping most of the day, then out at night, Where all cats are grey, and out of sight, Eyeing his prey, he’ll be alright. Mr. Johnson likes it here. He’s purring, so it’s pretty clear, He likes to be within our sphere. Sleeping most of the day, then out at night, Where all cats are grey, and out of sight, Eyeing his prey, he’ll be alright. Bringing mice to our door, There is no need to go to a store, He is a hunter down to the core, He’ll be alright. Mr. Johnson’s out of food, But he’s king of the neighborhood, People like to do him good. Sleeping most of the day, then out at night, Where all cats are grey, and out of sight, Eyeing his prey, he’ll be alright. Bringing mice to our door, There is no need to go to a store, He is a hunter down to the core, He’ll be alright. Mr. Johnson’s out today, Playing with another stray, Yet again it’s the black and grey.

They say... Rome wasn’t built in a day They say... It really takes your breath away They built it brick by brick... I know... Takes lotta work to build up trust I know... I know such things cannot be rushed we build it brick by brick... It’s not It’s not the same when you break it These things These things can break in a heartbeat Failure... I have broken what we built I failed her... My faults are filling me with guilt We built it brick by brick... It’s not It’s not the same when you break it These things These things can break in a heartbeat We built it brick by brick... We built it brick by brick...

I grew from monkey into man, Now I have the world in the palm of my hand. I can do what I want, you understand. I have mastered time and space. I am the culmination of the human race. Now I travel to any time and any place. Now the world is my playground and I’m ready to go. My eyes are open to see, and I’ll enjoy the show. Thousands of years of history has got nothing on me, Caesar, Attila, Napoleon, and I’ve got the key. No challenge is too big for me, Neither the highest mountain nor the deepest sea. I can do anything, ’cause I am free. I wanna visit Knut the Great, I wanna yield an axe and challenge fate, I wanna show them all I’m no second rate. Now the world is my playground and I’m ready to go. My eyes are open to see, and I’ll enjoy the show. Thousands of years of history has got nothing on me, Elvis, John Lennon and Hendrix, and I’ve got the key. My power is absolute, I can eat from the forbidden fruit. No threats will ever succeed in taking root. I wanna visit Pangaea, To see the world in Mesozoic times, With dinosaurs and pre-historic primes. Now the world is my playground and I’m ready to go. My eyes are open to see, and I’ll enjoy the show. Thousands of years of history has got nothing on me, Shakespeare, da Vinci and Mozart, and I’ve got the key.

A stranger arrived at the tavern today. Dressed all in black, in an unfamiliar way. I served him his mead, he seemed satisfied, Expectant, yet surprised, like if it was the first time he tried. Could he be the one? Could the stories be true? He doesn’t look like a hero, doesn’t wear white and blue. Is he the man from the promise, the elders foretold? Or is that just a saga, repeated since days of old? Oh how I wish I could see what goes on in his mind, But I fear when he leaves, he’s gonna leave me behind. Never again I could see myself find, Something so strange, someone of his kind. Word is that Thor himself holds him dear. Thunder was rumbling but the skies were clear. Silence fell, and then he’d appear, Voiceless and strange, but I got the sense, that we had nothing to fear. Oh how I wish I could see what goes on in his mind, But I fear when he leaves, he’s gonna leave me behind. Never again I could see myself find, Something so strange, someone of his kind. When the jarl’s men arrived, he was gone. Whatever he needed to do, had been done. The townsfolk they tell me to just let him go, But he’s on the tip of my mind, though as if it’s covered in snow. Oh how I wish I had seen what went on in his mind, But as I feared when he disappeard, he left me behind. Never again I could see myself find, Something so strange, someone of his kind.

I have no idea what day it is today, I can’t even recall my name. My head, it feels so clouded in such a peculiar way, My body feels kinda lame. My eyelids weigh a ton, I can barely lift them up, Not that it matters anyway. All I see is darkness, how do I make it stop? How do I keep this weirdness at bay? ”Awakening complete” says an electronic voice, I cough as I’m gasping for air. Lots of systems beeping now, I filter out the noise, Something sticky is in my hair. What in the world could this be? And then it dawns on me. What in the world could this be? And then it dawns on me. Suddently the lights come on, everything is white, My eyes are burning as I close my lids. It takes a while to adjust, everything is so bright, ”To your station”, the computer bids. Waking up from stasis would be a shock to most, I don’t know how it happened to me. Do I have a function here? Where is my post? I unstrap and set myself free. Where is the coffee on this ship? I have to find it, or I’ll loose my grip. Where is the coffee on this ship? I have to find it, or I’ll loose my grip. It seems I’m only one of many people waking up, Looks of confusion all around. Suddenly a speaker system makes a noisy pop, ”Your captain speaking, we’re planet bound. "Welcome to Tau Ceti, please remain calm, Shuttles will be dispatching soon.” I swear I saw at least a few people pinch their arm, On a screen I saw a foreign moon. Turns out this is a colony crew. My memory’s back, now I’m part of something new. Turns out this is a colony crew. My memory’s back, now I’m part of something new.

Sometimes I feel like I Go through the motions, but That’s just my mind playing tricks. Really it’s all about my Choices in life, I just Need to do what gives me the kicks. Remember that it matters not, How Big or small your project is, ’Cause Any building needs its starting bricks. It’s all about believing, And putting it to the test. It’s time to do some living. So rest assured, I will come And take your hand, if you need it, So let go of all your worries my friend. One step at a time and you’ll Discover you’ll be fine, and that Everything will work out in the end. Remember that it’s just a matter of Investing all your energy In your project and your time will be well spent. It’s all about believing, And putting it to the test. It’s time to do some living. Sometimes I feel like I Go through the motions, but That’s just my mind playing tricks.

The New Blip 04:44
I can remember a dream that I had Back in november, I must have been mad. I flew a starship, moving away, I saw a new blip on the display. I thought that I was here all alone, Flying the rocket all on my own. And yet I got to see a mysterious ship Following me... I tried to speed up to see if I could Leave him behind me, take note if he would Accelerate and follow me through A nearby nebula, what would he do? The ship kept up the pace and followed along. It was now a race, I said ”bring it on.” The radio lit up, I couldn’t believe He was talking to me... I don’t speak alien, now here’s a surprise, I lost my patience, I’m done playing nice. I flip the ship and decelerate, He flies on past me, I’m not gonna wait. I’m not a diplomat, I shouldn’t be here. I’m not trained for that, this could get severe, I turn the engine off and drift in the void, Just sligntly annoyed... The alien spaceship went dark as well, Gone was the green blip, I thought ”oh Hell.” What was he doing? What was his plan? Where was he going? I tried to scan. Then suddenly I saw a hundred or more Of these alien machines on my monitor screens. They had me in their sight, I knew that this might Be the end of me... Then my eyes opened, I was covered in sweat. I closed my eyes again, tried to reboot my head. I found my space suit and slipped it on I opened up the hatch and stepped out on the ground. I looked at Mother Earth up there in the sky. The sun was almost up, shining into my eye, And on the red and rusty dust lifting up from the crust of the Martian soil...

Worth A Try 03:28
Such a beautyful morning, Wouldn’t you agree? When you’re done yawning, Come sit here with me. Spring time is coming, Just listen to the birds. We can go humming, Maybe sing a few words. They say that just singing a song Won’t change the world, But maybe it’s worth a try anyway... Your coffee is steaming, Come give it a taste. You’re practically beaming With delight on your face. Mr. Johnson is purring, He found a spot in the light. Soon he’ll be snorring, It’s been a long night. They say that just singing a song Won’t change the world, But maybe it’s worth a try anyway... I feel a new sense of purpose running through me. Sometimes a ray of sunlight is everything I need. Such a wonderful morning, Wouldn’t you agree? I believe the tide is turning, Just wait and see. They say that just singing a song Won’t change the world, But maybe it’s worth a try anyway...

Let’s go join a rocket crew, Fly into space. No need to stand in queue In the human race. We would be among the few, We could settle Mars. It would just be me and you, Out among the stars. It’s time to leave the Earth behind, This planet’s too far gone. It’s far too late to press rewind, Better to move on. On Mars we can start again, We could build a new home. It wouldn’t matter where we'd been, We could live in a dome. We could go mine an asteroid, Strike it rich in gold, Drift along into the void, Together we’d grow old. And we could leave Mars behind, The planet’s lost it’s cool. It’s getting way too intertwined With Earth, it’s lost its self-rule. We could explore the universe, Leave our system behind. No place too far to traverse, I know you wouldn’t mind. It’s time to leave the stars behind, Live on another plane. So say goodbye to mankind, It’s time to break the chain.

Most of the regulars have left the pub by now. I should go look for a room, if I still remember how. It’s early in the morning, I’ll be disturbing by the au pair. My overcoat is hanging on another man somewhere. The morning after a night like this is always something to dread. Better have another one before waking up in somebody else’s bed. Time moves slowly when you’re waiting for a chance To get ahead in life, instead I’m met with a glance. Bartender, please, we’re communicating still, Keep my tap open, tomorrow I’ll pay my bill, And then I’ll go pick up some morning bread, A little give back as thanks for letting me wake up in somebody else’s bed. All I really ask for is a moment to spare. Time moves awfully quickly when you have to be somewhere. It isn’t easy to salvage a ship that’s already half-way sunk, Soon I’ll have to try to bring myself out of this funk. Because normalcy is hanging by a thread, For now though, it’s time to try to sneak back into sombody else’s bed.

Insomnia 04:10
Another sleepless night - It seems that I Cannot win this fight - I don’t know why. Soon the morning light - will ruin Any chance I’ve got - at finding some rest, My eyes just won’t shut - i’m getting stressed. Soon I’ll have to stop - trying, I’ll have to get up - I’m dying, Spinning like a top - I’m crying. No shoteye for me - I’m wide awake, Nowhere left to flee - I need a break. Then I take a deep breath and focus my mind, And I start to feel my troubled thoughts unwind. I know everything will be just fine in the end, I believe I am ready now to transcend. Here we go again - I’m in limbo. It’s just like endless rain - On my window. I’m gonna go insane - If I can’t Make it all go away - Noises and light, Not another day - with a sleepless night. Then I take a deep breath and focus my mind, And I start to feel my troubled thoughts unwind. I know everything will be just fine in the end, I believe I am ready now to transcend. Looking at the clock - it’s so early, Should I call the doc? - I might as well Go out and take a walk - it feels like Nothing I can think of - really works, I picked the short straw - what are the perks? Then I take a deep breath and focus my mind, And I start to feel my troubled thoughts unwind. I know everything will be just fine in the end, I believe I am ready now to transcend.

There’s a land of the young and the plentiful, An enchanted island along the coast. I have traveled the sea. You were searching for me. I was out hunting deer in the local woods, With my dad and the rest of the brotherhood. She came in on a white horse, Saw her just as the sun rose. She was just like a princess, How could I ever resist? So I left my old life behind, To start a new one with her by my side. We rode off into the morning mist. She showed me things I didn’t know could exist. Never thought I could stay so long, But 300 years had come and gone. She was just like a princess, How could I ever resist? So I left my old life behind, To start a new one with her by my side. Lonely, I traveled to visit my family. They were long gone, there was nothing here left for me. My love warned me not to stray, Now the magic has gone away. So I sit here and age has caught up with me, Telling stories of life long tragedy, Stuck in the land I once called my home, Dreaming of the days in Tír na nÓg. She was just like a princess, How could I ever resist? So I left my old life behind, To start a new one with her by my side.

about

Behind the scenes
In January 2023 I joined Århus Sangskriverværksted (ÅSV) and participated in a five day winter retreat, strongly focused on songwriting, along with about thirty other participants. After more than a decade had passed since my last attempt at writing my own stuff on any scale, my friend Gunnar Snær Gunnarsson convinced me to join the community and give it a go. It took a few days for me to get going at the retreat, but then I managed to write and co-write some interesting songs, a few of which ended up on this album.

The rest of the songs on here were written during February Album Writing Month (fawm.org), an online community where songwriters are encouraged to write an album’s worth of material during the twenty-eight days of February.

I have always been a fan of odd time signatures, but I haven’t really explored them much myself before now. On this album I’ve experiemented with how crazy I could make it sound rhythmically while still preserving the strong melodies in the songs.

Lyrically the album plays around with science fiction themes like space flight and time travel while also exploring more down-to-earth material such as cats up to no good in the garden, relationships and inner strength.

In the digital booklet you might notice an image associated with each song. The images look a little off-putting, and that’s because they are all generated with the use of AI in a text-promt-to-image app called Night Café. I like the way the images are almost perfect, but there are inconsistencies in almost all of them. We live in interesting times. Soon the AI will improve to the point where we can’t tell the difference.

Musicians
Everything is performed by me, except the guitar theme on Brick By Brick and solo on The World Is My Playground which is performed by Gunnar Snær Gunnarsson and backing vocals on The Ballad of Tír na nÓg by Ellie Mackey.

The recording process was fairly simple and standard: Drums first, then bass, then layers upon layers of guitars, keyboards, clarinet and vocals along with a broad selection of percussion instruments. If less is more, imagine what more could be!

Thanks
It’s been quite a ride. When I joined Århus Sangskriverværksted in January I didn’t expect to have a finished album by the end of March. I didn’t really expect to get anything done at all, but here we are.

I would like to thank everyone who has backed me up during the process. People at ÅSV have been extremely helpful and welcoming. If you are an aspiring songwriter, I really recommend joining.

Most of all though, I’d like to thank you for picking up this album and giving it a listen. It means the world to me.

Thank you.
